Terminology

Definitions of the specific terms used to describe how the Dumfernley system works, written in plain language for users at any level of familiarity.

The terms below describe concepts that appear across the Dumfernley website and within the platform interface. Understanding them will help you interpret what the system shows and how the enquiry process is described.

Record

A single item of information that the Dumfernley system has received and processed. A record may represent a document, a data entry, an event, or another discrete unit of information, depending on the configuration in place. Records are the fundamental units that the classification and arrangement logic acts upon.

Classification

The process by which the system assigns a record to one or more categories based on its properties. Classification is applied automatically according to rules established for the relevant configuration. It determines how a record appears in structured views and whether it is grouped with related entries.

Category

A named grouping into which records are placed during classification. Categories are defined as part of the access configuration and may reflect content type, source, status, or other dimensions relevant to how the information is used. A record may belong to more than one category where the classification rules permit it.

Structured view

A display of classified records organised according to defined rules, such as category grouping or chronological order. A structured view presents information in a format intended to make it easier to review than a raw list would be. The views available to a user depend on the access configuration associated with their account.

Cross-reference

A connection identified between two or more records that share a common identifier, overlapping date range, or matching content property. Cross-references allow users to see related records together in the interface without searching for each one individually. They are based on shared properties, not on a semantic assessment of meaning.

Filter

A condition applied to a structured view that limits which records are shown, based on criteria such as category, date range, or source type. Applying a filter does not remove records from the system; it narrows the display. Removing the filter restores the complete view for the relevant category or grouping.

Access configuration

The set of settings established for a user account when access to the Dumfernley system is provisioned. The configuration determines which categories, views, and areas of the interface are available to that user. It is established as part of the access request review process and may be adjusted through the support team.

Enquiry

A message submitted through the contact form on the Enquire page. An enquiry may be a general question about the platform, a request for access, a question about an existing configuration, or a notification of a discrepancy. The support team reviews each enquiry individually and responds via email.

Access request

A specific type of enquiry in which the sender asks to be granted access to the Dumfernley platform or a part of it. An access request is subject to review and is not automatically approved. The outcome of a review is communicated directly to the email address provided in the enquiry form.

Support team

The team at Dumfernley Systems Pty Ltd responsible for receiving and responding to enquiries, reviewing access requests, and assisting users with questions about the platform. The support team can be reached at [email protected] and by telephone during business hours.

Interface

The user-facing layer through which a person with an active access configuration views structured information. The interface presents classified records in organised views and allows users to navigate between categories, apply filters, and review cross-referenced entries. It is distinct from the underlying classification and storage processes.

Timestamp

A date and time value attached to a record, indicating when the information was received by the system or when it was dated at source. Timestamps are used by the chronological arrangement function to sort records in the correct sequence within a structured view.
